Disney's Mulan II

a review by Princess Reburta
who is Ting-Ting's #1 Fan

Hello there. When I was little, I saw Mulan in theaters and loved it. I've always loved anything Chinese, though I have no proof of Chinese ancestry myself. I first found out about Mulan 2 on the imdb years before the commercials aired. Needless to say, I've been curious. Here are my thoughts:

During the time I saw this movie, I was running for Class Treasurer and let's just say I had inner conflicts (long story.) This movie came at exactly the right time for me and thus, I love it. Even if it hadn't, I still think this is Disney's best sequel.

The plot: Three plots in one, which moves things along. The best plot in my opinion was the princesses and the guards. I say Mushu was entirely selfish and acted like a villian for most of the movie. Dumb Mushu. Thankfully, there's more to the story than that. Mulan and Shang are as different as the sun and the moon, and this is proved and their love tested in the movie. One of the great things about love is that it's able to look past differences. (My favourite Disney movie is Treasure Planet, and my favourite Disney couple is Amelia and Doppler. They're yin and yang if there ever was!) Anyway, Mulan and Shang's ability to look past their differences is tested to the max on this mission. The mission is to escort three princesses (daughters of the Emperor) to the Upper Kingdom, Ki-Gong for arranged marriages to Lord Chin's sons. However, these are not average princesses. I cannot go any further without discussing the characters of the princesses.

Mei: Mei doesn't want to be "bad," she just trusts her heart and intuition. She does seem slightly rebellious and she is stubborn, but she means well. Mei falls in love with Yao at first sight, but the good news is, she loves him for who he is inside. (Guess she has really great intuition.) Mei's got conflicts of the heart but isn't afraid to do what she knows is right, no matter what others say.

Su: Su is one of those people that go along and get along. Not as deep as her sisters, but cheerful and with a great voice and laugh. It's hinted she's a bit torn between her sisters. She's the youngest.

Ting-Ting: Ting-Ting is the oldest, and plays a motherly role to her sisters. She also tries to keep them "on track" and has more inner conflicts than Mei does. She ignores what her heart tells her, perhaps she feels she cannot trust her heart. She's a very diverse character, by this I mean she has many different sides, almost a different side of her personality in every scene, be it strict, silly, sad, motherly, loving, ready- -she's diverse.

Mei, Su, and Ting-Ting fall in love with Yao, Chien-Po, and Ling (well that's inevitable.) Thing is, they're suppossed to be married in Ki-Gong. Mei realizes this life isn't right and wants to be "Like Other Girls," while Ting-Ting refuses and tries to set her sisters straight again. I shall not give the story away if you have not seen it, but if requested I will write a longer review with spoilers.

A Bit Of What I Thought:
Ting-Ting rules. Literally. She is my favourite Disney girl ever, and that's saying something. Her incredibly diverse character and the fact that I could relate to her at the time of my viewing have earned her the number one spot. I highly recommend this movie to anyone. I also say that this movie's great because you can pick the point of view of any character and follow along with it on the journey. This movie is about a journey, not only to their destination, but everyone takes a journey inside their souls and changes their lives.
