Oh man, sappy love song. Possibly depressing, too. Which is not to say I don’t like it, because I love it. This song was meant to be in the movie in the tent scene when Pocahontas and John Smith say their goodbyes before Smith’s execution, but it was deemed too draggy and axed. And as much as I love this song and as much as I want to see more screentime of the romance, I understand why it was cut out. It is sappy, and little kiddies can only take so much sap. Anyway, this single version was sung by Shanice and Jon Secada, and if you don’t know them you don’t know your early nineties pop rock and pop ballads. I remember the first time I listened to this song after watching the movie. I could feel that it belonged to the story, but at the time I didn’t know it was meant for the tent scene. So I shut my eyes and listened to song with the movie in my head, and my mental image placed Pocahontas and John Smith singing it separately after the end of the movie, Pocahontas in her hut in Virginia and Smith in some hospital in England, and both of them are gazing out the roof opening/window at the stars (a la An American Tail). Anyway, it’s still a great song. .....oOo..... If I never knew you
And if I never held you
In this world so full of fear
And I’m so grateful to you
If I never knew you
I’m so grateful to you
I thought our love would be so beautiful
I thought our love would be so beautiful
And if I never knew you
