NEW ARRIVAL

PART 1

Melody was nervous. Her new baby sibling would be coming within the hour, and she was nervous, even a little bit scared. She was sincerely hoping it would be a girl, because that way she could dress her up like a little doll and they could play together when she got older. Also because Melody’s friend Marissa told her that baby boys pee in your face when you try to change them (Marissa has four little brothers), and Melody certainly didn’t want that. Melody paced faster and faster outside the room and got even more anxious with every minute. Most of all, Melody was scared for her mother, Ariel. Would she be okay? What if the baby was okay, but her mother wasn’t? Or vice versa? Just as Melody’s head was about to explode, her father, Eric came out. “Dad!” Melody cried. “Is Mom alright? What about the baby?” Eric chuckled. “Come here, Melody.” He said as he ushered Melody into the room. On the bed sat Ariel, perfectly fine, (although her hair was a bit damp) holding Melody’s baby sibling in her arms. “Mom.” Melody sighed. “What is it?” Ariel laughed. “It’s a baby, Melody.” she said. Melody smiled. “I mean the baby.” she said. “Is it a boy or a girl?” “It’s a girl.” Ariel replied. Melody breathed a sigh of relief. “Do you want to hold her?” Ariel asked. “Yes!” Melody ansewered. Very carefully, Melody took her baby sister and held her, not too tightly, not too loosely, but just fine. Melody was dazzled by how small her sister was. But she knew she’d get bigger as time passed. “Her name is Nori.” Ariel said. “And she’s your new sister, Melody.” Melody smiled as she passed baby Nori back to her mother.

As time went by Nori was a fussy baby, but she loved to be around Melody. She never cried when Melody tickled her. (Most babies don’t like to be tickled) She never squirmed when Melody held her. When she was sad, Ariel would send Melody in, amd she always cheered Nori up. But soon, Ariel and Eric thought that the bond between Melody and Nori was a little too strong. Nori only drank her bottle when Melody fed it to her. When Nori cried, she wanted Melody to hold her. The only thing Nori let Ariel and Eric do was change her diapers. So, the following day, Eric and Ariel paid a visit to a counsillor while Melody took care of Nori. “Come in, young couple.” said the aged counsillor. “I am Madame Ouspankyla. What can I do for you?” When Ariel and Eric told Madame Ouspankyla their problem, she shook her head. “I’ve seen it before.” said Madame Ouspankyla. “Tell me, did you let young Melody hold Nori when she was first born?” Ariel replied that she had. Madame Ouspankyla shook her head again. She explained that Melody was the first person Nori saw when she was born. Therefore, Nori thinks that Melody is her mother. Somehow, Ariel would have to convince Nori that she was her mother and that Melody was simply her sister. Ariel and Eric thanked Madame Ouspankyla, left the tent, and went home.

Later, at dinner, Eric and Ariel told Melody of what would happen in the next few days, she was a bit sad that Nori wouldn’t be paying as much attention to her. But Melody was glad that Nori would be paying mother/daughter love to the person who deserved it: Ariel.
