This is an adorable father-daughter episode that shows a side of King Triton that had never been seen before.
When the episode starts, Ariel is having a party. She's happily dancing with her friends, while Urchin hogs the seaweed pizza and Sebastian leads the band. The music is really loud, and gets the attention of King Triton. Ariel's father checks out the party, and Ariel reduces the volume when requested, then adorably invites her father to dance.
But all that's really just to show that Triton is feeling his age. Ariel wants to do something to make him feel better, and is glad when Glowfish the royal treasurer offers to get a special charm to help Triton. But Glowfish doesn't have good intentions; he conspires with a mysterious villain called the Sorceress — she wants Triton's trident, while Glowfish wants Triton's treasure. The Sorceress gives Glowfish a magic shell and a magic flute. (Side note: I would've loved to see more of the Sorceress, who's a really creepy villainess, but alas she only appears in this episode.)
Glowfish gives the shell to Ariel, and when she gives it to her father, Glowfish plays the flute and POOF! Triton the old merman turns into Triton the young merboy, though the merboy insists that his name is "Red". (Because of his red hair?) Ariel and Sebastian suddenly find themselves being the babysitters of the day, because Red is a majorly stubborn and adventurous trouble-maker.
So for once, instead of Ariel swimming around making people worry, Red's the one swimming around and making Ariel worry. She and Sebastian give chase, trying to get Red to not get into trouble, especially when he's technically still the King of the Ocean, and has both the crown and trident with him. It's a really cute turnaround of the usual scene, with Ariel frantically trying to keep up with Red. It's fitting that the only merperson able to outdo Ariel is her own father.
|Glowfish:||Caring for your treasure is my pleasure, Your Majesty.|
|Triton:||Oh, I'm just an old fuddy-duddy.|
|Ariel:||Oh, you aren't a fuddy-duddy, daddy.|
|Triton:||Yes, I am. Seems like only yesterday you were swimming around, getting into mischief.|
|Sebastian:||That was yesterday.|
|Sorceress:||Oh, the king is feeling his age, is he? He ought to try living in a cave for a few centuries!|
|Red:||Hey, you wanna play or something?|
|Sebastian:||You can't play! You're King Triton, ruler of Atlantica!|
|Red:||Really? Then I can play anything I want!|
|Sebastian:||Slow down, my mischievous little Majesty!|
|Ariel:||Daddy, no! Humans are dangerous, too!|
|Sebastian:||Now where have I heard that before?|
|Sebastian:||He certainly is a royal bundle of energy.|
|Ariel:||Yeah, and I wish he'd run out of it.|
|Ariel:||Red, how many times must I tell you — oh no. Oh no, I'm starting to sound just like my father!|
|Red:||( Speaking to Ariel. ) You know, you're nice. But you're about as much fun as an old sea slug.|
|Sebastian:||Oh, did His Majesty get a boo-boo?|
|Red:||You mean you spoil my fun because you like me?|
|Ariel:||Yeah, kinda strange, isn't it?|
|Sorceress:||Someday I'll get you, Triton! I'll get you, and your little mermaid, too!|
