Some television airings cut the scene where Spot has to sleep outside the palace and wakes up everyone. The video release contains the missing scene.

Spot returns in the later episode Save the Whale.

This is the pilot of the The Little Mermaid series, setting the tone for the episodes to follow and featuring some surprisingly detailed animation. I tend to notice this things, what with my fascination with underwater movement, so Ariel's hair and tail move quite fluidly, and in some places almost exactly the same way they did in the film.

On to the story itself, Spot is migrating with his family when they are attacked by whalers. In the panic to flee, Spot is separated from the herd and ends up wandering alone. His sad wails are heard by Ariel and Flounder, who soon find him. Although Flounder thinks adopting a killer whale (even if he is only a baby) is a bad idea, Ariel insists on taking him in and protecting him. Sebastian, too, gets in on the secret and agrees to keep the knowledge to himself starting a trend that will go on right to the end of the series.

Three months pass, in which Ariel has successfully kept Spot hidden in her room, and Spot himself has grown up to a tremendous size. During a special concert held by Sebastian during the Spring Celebration, Spot hears the music and is enthralled. He follows it, ending up in the concert hall and accidentally wrecking havoc with his happy dancing and wailing along.

King Triton points out the obvious: Spot can't stay. Ariel retaliates that Spot can't leave, because he's unable to protect himself out in the wilderness, since Ariel has been caring for him all this while. Triton decrees that Sebastian, Ariel and Flounder will teach Spot to realise his true nature, so that he can take care of himself. They have two weeks.

It's not an easy task, because despite the fact that he's a huge killer whale, Spot has had no experience being aggressive. Even Flounder pretending to be a shark manages to make Spot scared. But the solution rears its head and Spot learns that although he's not naturally aggressive and never will be, he can take care of himself when it counts.

Quotable quotes:

Ariel:Flounder, it's a
Flounder:A k-k-k-killer whale!
Ariel:It's only a little one.
Flounder:You call that little? His teeth are bigger than I am!
Ariel:See, (Spot) likes you! You'll be his big brother!
Flounder:I don't wanna be his big brother! I don't want to be a midnight snack, either.
Flounder:Ariel, you know he shouldn't be in here. Killer whales are horrible! They're the worst things in the sea!
Ariel:Come here you horrible Spot, you.
( Spot is right behind Ariel. )
Sebastian:Whatchu doing with that whale?!
Ariel:What whale?
( While trying to teach Spot to be fierce. )
Sebastian:My friends, it's time to face facts. The boy is not getting it.
Ariel:He's just gentle. He doesn't know how to be mean.
