Gallery: Books and Short Stories (4)
A Whale of a Time (1998)
Ariel, Flounder and Sebastian befriend a baby whale, and the story has a couple of
similarities with the TV series episode
A Whale of a Tale. This
story was also published under the title "The Big Baby".
Ariel's Treasure Hunt (1998)
This simple story is part of the "First Readers" reading series, and
features Ariel and Sebastian going on a treasure hunt.
The Little Mermaid: Short Stories (1998)
This unusual illustrated storybook features 5 short stories that are similar to
and match up with the
1994 novel series, in that the stories are
focused on life in the palace and especially the seven princesses, Attina is a bookworm,
Adella is beauty-obsessed, and other things. The stories in this book are:
- "Ursula's Curse" - Ariel puts on a ring cursed by Ursula and falls into a deep
sleep.
- "Toby the Terrible" - The princesses take turns babysitting Toby, a merboy with a
deep mischievous streak.
- "Sea Horse Steeplechase" - Ariel becomes coach for her sisters in the sea horse
steeplechase race. (Nice depiction of Ariel as bossy when she's in charge. She's far more similar
to Triton than she realizes!)
- "Having a Ball" - Triton and family receive an invite for a ball by Lady Ula, a new
arrival in Atlantica.
- "Flounder Goes North" - Ariel befriends Anemone, a mermaid from the Arctic who's
amazed by the beauty of Atlantica.
The scans below are only of the major illlustrations in the book.
The Little Mermaid and Spot (2000)
Spot is visiting Ariel and gang when they get on the bad side of Crabby the crab.
Triton even gets a share of the adventure in this one (!) which is unusual but
very welcome.
Ariel and the Sea-Horse Race (2002)
Ariel sets out to prove some cocky your sea-horse racers wrong. I'm not sure
exactly where this short story originated from, but it's featured in one of the "5-Minute Adventure
Stories" books and "Happily Ever After Stories".
Ariel's Fishy Face Contest (2002)
The cute little board book has Atlanticans holding a fishy face contest.
The Fairest of the Fall (2003)
This junior picturebook has two stories about autumn, and in Ariel's she observes human celebrating Halloween and decides she wants to try it herself.
A Merry Mermaid Christmas (2004)
This is another version of the story about how Ariel learns about human Christmas and
decides to bring its practices into Atlantica.
