Lego Disney Princess: D+ Specials

Lego's Disney Princess range of toys and books have been around for a while, and the subfranchise has gotten two Disney+ animated streaming specials.

The Castle Quest

The first special was released for Disney Princess Week 2023: Lego Disney Princess: The Castle Quest. In this special, Gaston has stolen a whole bunch of magical artifacts and also kidnapped King Triton in order to get his trident. Triton offers a deal of his own, in the form of a contest between Gaston and five champions who are summoned to the castle, i.e. Ariel, Moana, Rapunzel, Tiana and Snow White.

Ariel is horrified to learn about her father's predicament, and at first tries to insist that she'll handle Gaston's challenges on her own. But her new friends are just as determined to help her, so the five princesses work together to solve the puzzles of the castle and stop Gaston.

It's a breezy little streaming special with just a touch of modern humour (though quite restrained -- this isn't Wreck-It Ralph), and it features quite a few returning voice actors, including Jodi Benson as Ariel and Jim Cummings as Triton. Ariel is kind of the "main" princess of the special, so gets quite a few moments to shine, including mentioning some new "human things" she gets charmingly wrong, plus she gets to hang out with Moana, another princess with water affinity. The ending of the special also leaves the world wide open for the princesses to return for more adventures and to add new friends to their little gang.

Villains Unite

The second special, Lego Disney Princess: Villains Unite, was released for Disney Princess Week 2025. It directly follows the first special, and has Gaston determined to regain control of the castle and boot the princesses out. To that end Gaston has recruited some other villains to help him out: Sir Hiss, Jafar, Ursula, the Evil Queen and a mysterious Bog monster who will attack the castle.

Snow White sees the villains group gathering and warns her own crew, who recruit three more princesses to the cause: Belle, Aurora and Cinderella. Gaston, understandably, has some problems getting his gathering of villains to work together, unlike the princesses who get on immediately and support each other in readiness to take down the villains.

It's a pretty cute follow up, and the villains including Ursula have some funny antics in their interactions, though as to be expected they have less screentime in the short than the slightly larger gathering of princesses. Ariel is again voiced by Jodi Benson, while Ursula is voiced by Debra Wilson, who does a good job.
