The movie Mermaid's Song (which was earlier titled Charlotte's Song) is a drama movie with fantasy-horror elements. It's set during the Dust Bowl era of the US, and revolves around a family that runs a small bar that features a song-and-dance act.
When the movie opens, family patriarch George handles the business while his wife Serena leads the song-and-dance with her five older daughters. Serena also happens to be a former mermaid who'd traveled on land after saving George's life, and whose siren voice gives the performance that little something extra. However, Serena leaving the ocean caused an imbalance, and her sixth and youngest daughter Charlotte is expected to go to the ocean to take her place. Serena refuses to allow this, and buys Charlotte some time by committing suicide.
Some years pass, and the family business struggles to keep going. Charlotte itches to join her sisters in performing, seemingly unaware of the lewd and dangerous reality that is their family business. Her older sisters try to protect her, but George makes some decisions that bring gangster Randall into their orbit and force Charlotte into the spotlight. Along the way, Charlotte discovers the siren power in her song, as well as her true mermaid form.
