Raya Sirena

Seven-episode Filipino miniseries Raya Sirena is a light-hearted YA-style coming-of-age story following Raya, a recently-orphaned teenager who, although wealthy and having trusted loved ones around her, is feeling a little overwhelmed trying to manage her late father's legacy of a seaside resort. Things are not made any easier when Raya's money-minded aunt tries to trick Raya into giving up her inheritance.

On top of that, strange things start to happen to Raya as she approaches her sixteenth birthday. A voice from a conch shell tells Raya about her secret connection to the sea, and soon Raya's transformation into a mermaid leads her more fully to the legacy of her mother's side of the family.

It's a pretty brisk and frothy story, and although there aren't many underwater scenes, the few there are there are quite pretty, with actress Sofia Pablo bringing charm to her portrayal of Raya.
