There have been quite a few horror movies riffing on children's and Disney media, and I guess since the live-action The Little Mermaid came out in 2023, it was time for a horror movie that uses a more traditional-looking casting for the mermaid.
Dr. Eric Prince is an archaeologist who's on the cusp of discovery in the Caribbean, and then he meets Aurora (Lydia Helen), a mysterious woman who's interested in his work. We already know Aurora is bad news because she ate two fishermen before meeting Eric, though she had a tail at the time. Basically Aurora is an immortal being, one among many all over the world, who are trying to bring back the Old Gods to remake the world in their image, and Eric is the means for Aurora to make that happen.
Besides Eric and Aurora, there's not much else that references the animated movie, I think. Eric is an adventurer-archaelogist type, and Aurora can speak, has siren powers, and is knowledgeable about humans. There are some brief underwater scenes.
