Part of Your World

Ariel's "I Want" song, and the theme that embodies the spirit of the movie and is used throughout again and again to remind that it's Ariel's longing that drives the entire story. Through this song Ariel expresses her fascination with the world above and idealist views of what she dreams it's really like.

Trivia bit: When Jodi Benson recorded the song for the film, they were having problems getting the right performance, and the song only came together when the lights in the studio were dimmed so that Jodi could full immerse herself in the feeling of being underwater.

Thanks to Joahn for the lyric correction!

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl, the girl who has everything?
Look at this trove, treasures untold
How many wonders can one cavern hold?
Lookin' around here you'd think, sure, she's got everything

I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty
I've got who's-its and what's-its galore
You want thingamabobs? I've got twenty
But who cares, no big deal, I want more

I want to be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see 'em dancing
Walkin' around on those - what do you call them again? Oh, feet
Flippin' your fins, you don't get too far
Legs are required for jumping, dancing
Strolling along down a - what's that word again? Street

Up where they walk
Up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wandering free
Wish I could be
Part of that world

What would I give if I could live out of these waters
What would I pay to spend a day warm on the sand
Betcha on land they understand
Bet they don't reprimand their daughters
Bright young women, sick of swimmin'
Ready to stand

And ready to know what the people know
Ask 'em my questions and get some answers
What's a fire and why does it - what's the word? Burn
When's it my turn?
Wouldn't I love
Love to explore that shore up above?
Out of the sea
Wish I could be
Part of that world

Part of Your World: worktape

An early work tape version of "Part of Your World", with the scratch vocals of Alan Menken, was included in the album "The Music Behind the Magic". The work tape here is an early, highly abridged one, only featuring the opening paragraphs with some significantly different lyrics from those that ended up in the final version. Thanks to Mariah for sending this in.

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouln't you think I'm the girl
The girl who has everything?

Look at this trove, treasures untold
Copper and bronze and fine leather and gold
Paper and china and books
And look, feathers and everything

I should start an aquatic museum
I've got gadgets and what's-its galore
All these fish'd pay money to see 'em
But who cares, no big deal, I want more...

Part of Your World: demo

This other early demo draft of the song also features the vocals of Alan Menken and was included in the "Music Behind the Magic" album. It's a bit more cleaned up from the work tape, and has more of the familiar lyrics that ended up being in the final version.

I want to be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see 'em dancing
Walkin' around on those - what do you call 'em? Oh, feet
Flippin' your fins, you don't get too far
Legs are required for jumpin', dancin'

Up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Where they breathe free free

Part of Your World: synth demo

This synth demo with vocals by Alan Menken was featured in the "Legacy Collection" is more complete and almost exactly the final version.

Maybe he's right, maybe there is something the matter with me. I just don't see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be bad.

Part of Your World: Debbie Shapiro Gravitte

Debbie Shapiro Gravitte covers Ariel's song and uses its title for her album "Part of Your World: Debbie Shapiro Gravitte sings Alan Menken". Debbie's more mature-sounding voice is a little unusual for this song in particular, but the mix, and its inclusion of the reprise, very much sounds like the pop ballad single version of the song that might've come out with the film, if that were a thing they did at the time.

Part of Your World: Pop Dreamers

The "Pop Dreamers" album provides a remix version of "Part of Your World" as sung by an Alternate Universe version of Ariel. I think it's a pretty funky fun remix, with a catchy trance beat in the chorus that makes it an upbeat and pretty nifty version of the classic.

Part of Your World: Q;indivi

The group Q;indivi recorded a groove/electro-pop cover of Part of Your World for the album "Lovebeat". This version creatively mixes up the order of the lyrics in a way that still makes musical sense, plus the music is pretty groovy.

I want to be where the people are
I want to see, wanna see them dancing

Part of Your World: Broadway demo

Kerry Butler recorded a demo version for the stage musical workshop. The lyrics are near identical to the movie version, but the background music has been changed somewhat from the intimacy of the movie version to something a bit more bold, showing that they intend this piece to be a belting show-stopper.

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?

Part of Your World: Broadway

Sierra Boggess sings as Ariel in the original Broadway cast of the stage show. The lyrics and music are near identical to the movie version, recreating the sweetness that Jodi Benson gave us in the movie. The only difference, I feel, is that Sierra's accent is more distinct as she pronounces the words, and near the end the song builds into a bigger crescendo that is expected of a ballad show-stopper.

If only I could make my father understand. I just don't see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be so bad.

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?

I want to be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see 'em dancin'
Walkin' around on those - what do you call them? Oh, feet
Flippin' your fins, you don't get too far
Legs are required for jumpin', dancin'
Strolling along down the - what's that word again? Street

Up where they walk
Up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wanderin' free
Wish I could be
Part of that world

What would I give if I could live out of these waters
What would I pay to spend a day warm on the sand
Betcha on land they understand
Bet they don't reprimand their daughters
Bright young women, sick of swimmin'
Ready to stand

And ready to know what the people know
Ask 'em my questions and get some answers
What's a fire and why does it - what's the word? Burn
When's it my turn?
Wouldn't I love
Love to explore that shore up above?
Out of the sea
Wish I could be
Part of that world

Part of Your World: BBC 2008 Celebration

Kerry Butler, who'd sung as Ariel in the Broadway demo recording, got to sing for her again at the 2008 BBC Radio 2 Celebrates the Music Disney concert. The instrumentals in this are lovely, it was a great going-back-to-basics thing after having heard so many different remixes.

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl, the girl who has everything?
Look at this trove, treasures untold
How many wonders can one cavern hold?
Lookin' around here you'd think, sure, she's got everything

I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty
I've got who's-its and what's-its galore
You want thingamabobs? I've got twenty

Part of Your World: Songs and Story

Ayana Haviv sings a cover that's almost identical to the original film version, for the album "Songs and Story".

If only I could make my father understand. I just don't see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be so bad.

Part of Your World: Anna Maria Perez de Taglé

Anna Maria Perez de Taglé sings a funky take of "Part of Your World" in "Disney Mania 7", which means that this song has been covered for every single odd-numbered "Disney Mania" album. Is that a thing? It might just be. Anyway, she has a lovely voice with personality, which makes me wish we could hear more of her instead of the busy music.

Wanna go what I want
Wanna go for a runnin'
Wanna be on my own
Wanna be free to dance dance

Part of Your World: Carly Rae Jepsen

With every DVD release there has to be a new cover, so for 2013 Diamond Edition and "The Little Mermaid: Greatest Hits" album, Carly Rae Jepsen was brought on board to sing the classic "Part of Your World". This is an earnest version, with none of the pop frills that's more common to remixing, making it very similar to the film version. The accompanying music video has, as a bonus, Carly Rae Jepsen looking very Ariel-like herself.

Part of Your World: Jessie J

Singer Jessie J performed a cover of "Part of Your World" for the 2015 album "We Love Disney". It's a confident, back-to-basics rendition of the song in the style of one who wants to perform a classic just the way it is, and has only a few natural flourishes here and there for Jessie's powerful, husky voice to shine. Well done.

Part of Your World: May J.

Japanese singer May J. performed the end title version of "Let It Go" for the Japanese release of "Frozen", which was a pretty decent hit. Following up on that, in 2015 she released the cover album "May J. Sings Disney", which contains covers of various Disney songs. One of the tracks is "Disney Princess Medley" where May J. is accompanied by violinist Emiri Miyamoto in taking on "Some Day My Prince Will Come" + "Once Upon a Dream" + "Part of Your World".

Part of Your World/A Whole New World mash-up

Official acapella group DCappella perform a nifty mash-up of "Part of Your World" and Aladdin's "A Whole New World" for their debut album. The two songs mesh together really well in terms of tone and topic, plus it's cool how they expanded "Part of Your World" into the duet format.

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl, the girl who has everything?

I can show you the world
Look at this trove, treasures untold
Shining, shimmering
How many wonders can one cavern hold?
Splendid
Looking around here you'd think
When did you last let your heart decide?
She's got everything
I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty
I can open your eyes
I've got who's-its and what's-its galore
Take you wonder by wonder
You want thingamabobs? I've got twenty

But who cares
But who cares
No big deal
No big deal
I want more
A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming
A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you

What would I give if I could live out of these waters
Unbelievable sights
What would I pay to spend a day warm on the sand
Indescribable feeling
Betcha on land they understand
Soaring, tumbling
They don't reprimand their daughters
Bright young women, sick of swimmin'
Freewheeling
Ready to stand
Through an endless diamond sky
A whole new world
A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
Every moment red letter
No one to tell us no
Tell us no
Or where to go
Where to go
Or say we're only dreaming
A whole new world
Don't you dare close your eyes
A dazzling place I never knew
Hold your breath it gets better
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you

Out of the sea
Wish I could be
Part of your world

Part of Your World: DCappella

Part of Your World: live-action adaptation

Halle Bailey does her own take on the classic song for the live-action "The Little Mermaid" film, giving the song more flourishes that show off her lovely voice and are unlike any other version that's come before.

It's been true for a while, but this version pretty much cements Part of Your World as unique among all the TLM songs, in that it's the only one that, even with various different official versions recorded through the franchise, has had zero changes to the lyrics that were crystallized in the original 1989 film.
